چکیده

Freezing of atmospheric water on bituminous construction and road surfaces is a recurring event during winter. However, droplet freezing bitumen passive inhibition methods are poorly understood. Here we investigate relative humidity substrate cooling effects condensation subzero temperature find that explosive, with rapid local heating. We explain the related physics rate can affect sizes temperatures. then rationally embed phase change material microcapsules in bitumen, harnessing their latent heat to significantly delay freezing, demonstrating viable option for frost mitigation.

Dropwise Condensation of Low Surface Tension Fluids on Omniphobic Surfaces

Compared to the significant body of work devoted to surface engineering for promoting dropwise condensation heat transfer of steam, much less attention has been dedicated to fluids with lower interfacial tension. A vast array of low-surface tension fluids such as hydrocarbons, cryogens, and fluorinated refrigerants are used in a number of industrial applications, and the development of passive ...

Scale effect on dropwise condensation on superhydrophobic surfaces.

Micro/nano (two-tier) structures are often employed to achieve superhydrophobicity. In condensation, utilizing such a surface is not necessarily advantageous because the macroscopically observed Cassie droplets are usually in fact partial Wenzel in condensation. The increase in contact angle through introducing microstructures on such two-tier roughened surfaces may result in an increase in dro...

Kinetics of Water Loss from Cells at Subzero Temperatures and the Likelihood of Intracellular Freezing

The survival of various cells subjected to low temperature exposure is higher when they are cooled slowly. This increase is consistent with the view that slow cooling decreases the probability of intracellular freezing by permitting water to leave the cell rapidly enough to keep the protoplasm at its freezing point. The present study derives a quantitative relation between the amount of water i...

A Review of Condensation Frosting

The accretion of ice and frost on various infrastructure is ubiquitous in cold and humid environments, causing economic losses amounting to billions of dollars every year worldwide. The past couple of decades have seen unprecedented advances in the fields of surface chemistry and micro/nanofabrication, enabling the development of hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces that promote facile dei...

Dropwise condensation heat transfer process optimisation on superhydrophobic surfaces using a multi-disciplinary approach

Dropwise condensation has superior heat transfer efficiency than filmwise condensation; however condensate evacuation from the surface still remains a significant technological challenge. The process of droplets jumping, against adhesive forces, from a solid surface upon coalescence has been studied using both experimental and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. Both Lattice Boltzmann ...
